Mongol - Film Review

I've just watched Mongol. A film about the early life of Genghis Khan.

This is a stunning historical epic made by the award winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of the Mountains).

Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162.

I don't consider this a spoiler as almost everyone knows the story of Ghengis Khan and how he went on to rule most of the modern world (in his time).

It follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood (his father stole his bride from another clan and was eventually poisoned by his enemies). Temudgin was destined to take over his clan but due to being only 10 years old he couldn't fufil his Khan-ship. The film follows his life to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints an excellent portrait of the future conqueror. It reveals him, not as an evil brute, but as a loving husband and father and an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader.

Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the reasons why he became so great. All through the film his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor is explored and ultimately explained. Everything is sacrificed for love.

Filmed on the Steppes, the birth place of Genghis Khan, Mongol transports us back to a distant and exotic period in world history; to a nomad's landscape of endless space, climatic extremes and ever present danger.

The film explores love, friendship, betrayal and loyalty.

All in all a superb film.
